TV BLOG: KIDS WON'T SPEAK PROPER IF THEY FOLLOW TV STARS

TV blog: Kids won't speak proper if they follow TV stars

WRONG: Alesha's language is riddled with errors

STANDARDS of literacy in schools are falling all the time.

And with characters like Alesha Dixon on our television screens there's little wonder why.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge - who is watched by millions each week - speaks in English littered with grammatical mistakes.

Only this weekend the former singer told one of the dancers "they was great", instead of "were great".

And she said to another of the competitors their performance "was magic", rather than "was magical".

Alesha is a young, pretty woman who can not only dance, but has also come out fighting with dignity after a very public heartbreak.

It's only a shame that she can't be as good a role model when it comes to language.

By following her our kids ain't got a chance.

STOP WHINGEING...GLOBAL FOOTY IS THE FUTURE

Monday February 11,2008

Stop whingeing...global footy is the future

The Stretford End was unusually loud...

I WISH football fans would stop their moaning about the Premier League going global.

We all harp on about how our league is the best in the world but we’re not willing to share it.

What’s the harm in getting another million or so people passionate about the fight between the top four or the relegation scrap?

Why not give people in China the opportunity to watch Christiano Ronaldo on their doorstep?

Let’s get football fans in Dubai involved in the beauty (or should I say ugliness) of a Merseyside derby?

The more the merrier, I say. The hardcore supporters will always be there regardless.

Just look at the NFL for evidence that global sport works.

The 82,000 sell-out game at Wembley between Miami Dolphins and New York Giants secured them fans in 212 countries.

The world is shrinking...so why not embrace the change and allow a global fan base?

We’ve all bonded with people abroad through talking football alone. Let’s break down the barriers further.

It might even make following you

THE CURSE OF DAVID BECKHAM

Wednesday November 21,2007

The curse of David Beckham

FOSSIL: Walking relic David Beckham

TALK about events coming full circle.

When Steve McClaren took control of England in August 2006, his first major move was to drop David Beckham.

It was a decision aimed at setting him apart from the reign of Sven Goran Eriksson and to mark the beginning of a new  McClaren era.

It all seemed so promising. Finally, a manager with the balls to stamp his authority on a team that needed shaking up. A carefully thought-out decision for the good of the team.

But before you could say 'Turnip' Becks was back in the squad and McClaren’s new-game plan had disappeared into thin air.

A year on and what are the manager’s key tactics for tonight’s huge game against Croatia?

Axe Beckham.

It seems to me that this moment of deja-vu means one of two things:

If we qualify it signifies the true beginning of the McClaren era (no, I hear you groan). It's almost as if that was a trial run and this is a fresh start with a manager who sticks to his guns and keeps Becks out for good.  Take two, if you like.

THE WEEKEND WE FELL IN LOVE WITH SPORT

Monday October 22,2007

The weekend we fell in love with sport

LOVELY: Wilko may have given the girls something to smile about..

DESPITE ending in the type of disappointment that us English have grown used to, the weekend has given half of the country a reason to smile.

With edge-of-your-seat Rugby World Cup excitement on Saturday and nail-biting action courtesy of Formula 1 on Sunday (plus all the football in between), sport was the focus of everyone’s plans.

And not just for the male contingency.

Have you ever known so many women give up their Saturday night for a sporting occasion?

Week in, week out, men across the country desperately try to seduce their women into a Saturday night at home in front of Match of the Day.

Tactics like ‘let’s have a quiet one just the two of us’ are feverishly employed in the hope of being placed in proximity to a television by 10.30pm.

Most men fail most weeks and instead end up squinting at a pub screen (if they’re very very lucky).

But this week was different.

Despite a couple of women who bemoaned another Saturday night ruined – it would either be devoid of blokes or spent with a load of screaming ones – most embraced the idea of watching England v South Africa.

Almost every

STOP THUGS RUINING THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

Wednesday October 10,2007

Stop thugs ruining the beautiful game

Referees shouldn't have to put up with this

BARNET’S football may be three leagues off top tier standard but as far as ideas go, they are worthy of Premier League status.

The small League Two club is experimenting with one of the best ideas to be associated with the beautiful game in years – only letting the captain speak to referees.

It’s not rocket science but it’s really making a difference to Paul Fairclough’s team, who started the season like a herd of bulls in a china shop, receiving three red cards and eight yellows in their first four games.

Since striker Adam Birchall suggested only skipper Ismail Yakubu should take issue with the referee, not only have the amount of cards dropped (and no sign of a red since the beginning of September), they have also dramatically improved their form.

With four wins in six since the new “referee friendly” era, they’ve bounded up League Two to sixth and are being made an example of by the big guns in football.

Graham Horwood, who officiated their 2-0 win over Rotherham said it made his job “a lot easier”.

Since then FA chief exe
