BABY P COUNCIL 'IS STILL FAILING'

FAILURES: Baby P

Saturday July 4,2009

THE council criticised over the Baby P child abuse tragedy is still failing to protect children adequately, a report said yesterday.

It said Haringey Council in north London had made only “limited” progress in tackling weaknesses identified in a review last November.

Social worker case loads were still too big and their decisions in individual cases continued to be “inconsistent and insufficiently robust”.

The Ofsted inspectors report, ordered by Children’s Secretary Ed Balls, said many social worker posts were still filled by temporary staff.

Baby Peter, known as Baby P through most of the court case that led to the jailing of his mother and her boyfriend, was 17 months old and on the council at-risk register when he died in 2007.

He suffered 50 injuries in his last eight months, including a broken spine.

Council leader Claire Kober said the authority had taken action.
