Debate: Are flu jabs for the elderly totally pointless?

Wednesday February 17,2010

GIVING flu jabs to the over-65’s in a bid to stop them from falling ill is not based on any sound scientific evidence, experts have said.

A review of studies reveals that only one out of 75 proved that the flu vaccine protects patients.

The rest just showed the jab could boost flu antibodies in the blood, but not whether this translated into preventing real cases.

The NHS currently offers the seasonal jab to all high-risk groups, including the elderly.

They are seen as more likely to fall very ill with flu and suffer complications like pneumonia.

But two years ago a study by US scientists published in the Lancet said there was little evidence that the flu jab could stop patients from suffering complications such as pneumonia.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FLU JAB?

HAVE YOU HAD IT? AND IF SO, DID IT WORK?

DO YOU THINK THE FLU JAB IS INEFFECTIVE?

ARE YOU RELUCTANT TO HAVE IT?
