RETIREMENT
SIR TERRY WOGAN WINS RADIO PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
HE'S STILL GOT IT: Sir Terry Wogan (R) with Radio 2 breakfast show predecessor Chris Evans
By Express.co.uk reporter
SIR TERRY Wogan scooped a gong for digital radio personality of the year today, beating off stiff competition from top DJs.
Veteran Radio 2 presenter Sir Terry Wogan quitted his popular breakfast slot last year but continues to draw listeners back to the airwaves with his primetime Weekend Wogan shows.
Today the 71-year-old was honoured with a trophy at the annual TRIC Awards - voted for by members of the Television and Radio Industries Club.
Wogan beat his 43-year-old predecessor Chris Evans to the accolade, as well as popular Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Moyles.
Evans, who has suffered a backlash from some of Sir Terry’s die-hard fans, known as Togs (Terry’s Old Geezers/Gals), since taking over the Radio 2 breakfast show, presented the gong to Sir Terry at the London ceremony.

Sir Terry joked afterwards that he won because he benefited from the “sympathy vote” for having just had his knee replaced.
Of Evans, he said: “He’s been doing brilliantly, of course he has. People have to give him a chance. I was doing it for 100 years. You worm your way into people’s affections. He’s just been doing it for weeks.
“I don’t know whether he’s won over the Togs. I just lie on my bed and have my breakfast. I don’t think about the morning radio show. I miss the jollity and laughter of course but I lie in bed now.”
Asked whether he still tuned into the Radio 2 breakfast show, he said: “I listen to Chris, of course I do.”
Evans also failed to scoop the award for radio/digital radio programme, losing out to the Chris Moyles Show.
Described as the "perfect accompaniment to Sunday brunch", Wogan's new weekend show features celebrity interviews and live music recorded before a 300-strong audience.
The Tric Awards also saw EastEnders veteran Barbara Windsor (Peggy Mitchell) win a lifetime achievement title.
Windsor, 72, who is about to bow out of the BBC soap, said of her long career in showbusiness: “In a year or so it will be 60 years. I love it now as much as I did then.”
She added: “I know that I’m known for two great British institutions, EastEnders and Carry On.
“This year is going to be different for me because I’m leaving EastEnders.”
But she added: “I’m not retiring. It will be interesting to see what happens.”
EastEnders beat Hollyoaks and Coronation Street to TV soap of the year at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel.
Tess Daly put in another public appearance, after revelations that husband Vernon Kay sent explicit texts to other women, to collect the gong for Strictly Come Dancing for TV reality programme, beating The Apprentice and The X Factor.
Other winners were Doctor Who for TV drama, BBC Breakfast for TV daytime programme, Harry Hill for TV personality, Eamonn Holmes for satellite/digital TV personality and Ricky Whittle (Calvin Valentine in Hollyoaks) for TV soap personality.
Gary Lineker won the award for best sports presenter and turned up at the event with wife Danielle Bux.

EX TOG. TW your sunday show is a complete waste of air space. Something I was looking forward to. I suppose you got the award as time is running out. Have started to enjoy Chris Evans breakfast show as I really enjoyed his drivetime show which was varied, a complete family show involving children the future of radio2. Carry on the good work Chris, some people are just too set in their ways to change.
