DEBATE: SHOULD PREGNANT SMOKERS BE 'REWARDED' WITH £10-A-WEEK TO QUIT?

The organisation thinks a "reward" of £10-a-week should be given to pregnant smokers, in a bid to clamp down on their habit and reduce the health risks.

In another example of nanny-state madness, the Policy Exchange claimed £36 million-a-year should be spent on expectant mothers struggling to quit cigarettes - funded by a massive increase in cigarette tax.

It suggested a dedicated service would be put in place in maternity units, with mums-to-be aged 20 or under offered the £10-a-week "financial incentive."

The report - Cough Up - argued the cost to the public of smoking outweighed the revenue from duty, recommending a 5 per cent hike in next week's budget - a rise of 23p for a pack of 20 - with further rises over the next five years.
